The fight was going to take place on September 13 at Madison Square Garden in New York. The current 29-year-old super bantamweight champion of the WBA and the IBF from California (27,2,1) was ready to defend himself against the Uzbek boxer whit 24 years old who competed in men’s bantamweight in the 2016 Olympic Games (6,0,0).
“Anyone that knows me understands that I’m a real fighter,” said Roman. “I’ll fight anyone they put in front of me. Akhmadaliev is hungry, but so am I. It wasn’t that long ago when I challenged for the WBA title so we’re not going to give it up. I’m here to fight and defend the WBA belt once more. I have two belts, but I want more. My goal is to get all of them so by no means am I overlooking Akhmadaliev. He has that amateur pedigree, can punch with power and likes to come forward. The second you underestimate someone, that’s when bad things happen. I’ll be ready for whatever he brings.”
“I am very happy that Daniel Román has taken this fight,” said Akhmadaliev. “I know we are both warriors and this will be a real war! Don’t miss this fight!”. But sadly, ” DannyTheBabyFacedAssassin” had to withdraw from combat for a left shoulder injury in training, so he has no strength in his shoulder and cannot fight.
Roman’s trainer is the one who has been keeping us informed, telling us if Roman´s going on surgery or not and that he was given some time off from the gym. But this injury won’t stop Roman from facing Akhmadaliev.
“My plan is to rest and take it easy,” said Roman, “I want to fight Akhmadaliev before the year is over. We’ll have a better idea for a date as soon as I get medical clearance to resume training.”
The general manager from Thompson Boxing, Alex Camponovo commented: “It’s unfortunate that some people are saying that he’s using the injury as an excuse to not fight…He’s not running away from any challenge. That’s not who he is. For the other side to suggest anything otherwise is very immature and unprofessional.”
For now, we will have to wait for the recovery of Roman to know if this fight will resume its path and if it will be soon.
